YRAC + Figment Toronto + Comic Book Creating Workshops

Image
Happy holidays! I hope this finds you doing well! As some of you may know, I have been busying working on creating comic book workshops with a micro-grant from the York Region Arts Council , which helped to jumpstart this endeavour I had in mind for quite some time. I started designing them for beginners, as there is much interest from young creators looking at making their own comic books! I have completed workshops that provide an overview of what a comic book consists of that includes going from idea to story, and story to script. I have hosted a bunch of these workshops with various aged participants with much success. For the last little while, I was looking at furthering the development towards my long-term goal of having a set of workshops that would stack skills and perhaps lead to full lessons. The last workshop for 2020 I put together was a 3-day workshop for Figment Toronto where I invited artist Jason Lapidus to be a part of. Figment Toronto's usual 2-day in the park ...

Unlocking the Secrets of Creating Comic Books - Production - Week One

Image
It has been an interesting week. Since the announcement of being a recipient of the York Region Arts Council's Mirco Grant Program, I've been digging into all the workshops and talks I've done at conventions to festivals to consolidate all the materials and topics I have covered. I found myself having mixed feelings over particular topics on story development I've covered. This is the first time that I'm looking over everything as a whole. Fascinating looking back at all the particular topics I have covered, and thinking back to what worked and what needs improvements. Kind of like finding pieces to a puzzle you're not sure what it will really look like until you get closer to completing it. This also made me think of my own story development process and how I could improve it. In any creative endeavour, there are always challenges you have to meet and overcome. For some, it's seeking inspiration to create, while for others it's the act...

I am honoured to announce that I am one of the recipients of York Region Arts Council's   Micro Grant Program ! Congratulations to my fellow recipients, Alex Karolyi, Bindu Shah, Glenn Marais & Mimi O'Bonsawin, Parthiban & Myuri Jeyabalachandran, Matthew Morales, and Tanya Besedina. I can't wait to see and experience all their wonderful projects! My project,  Unlocking the Secrets of Creating Comic Books , is a series of skill stacking comic book creating workshops for 12 to 18-year-olds, where they will be learning all the steps  from concept to completion. There is a lot of work ahead of me and new challenges due to COVID-19, but with the help of the York Region Arts Council's grant it's great to be able to move forward with this project.  I look forward to working with local professional and indie comic book creators, and businesses to make this project a success!  The goal is to inspire and expose young creative minds to th...
