CRYSTAL FRACTAL COMICS EXPANDS ITS UNIVERSE WITH FOUR NEW TITLES.

Crystal Fractal Comics (CFC) has released four new books, building upon its line of comic books with new titles including Redorik #1, Entropy #1, The Crossing #2 and The Legend of the Sleeping Giant.

The Crystal Fractal Universe(CFU) is a mystically based comic book world where powerful mages and sorcerers come together for a mystical event, known as “The Crossing,” where 15 such individuals attempt to enter the first level of hell; the dream realm. During the event, something goes awry and each is sucked into a different portal and lost to the time stream indefinitely. CFC’s latest titles add to the premise set in CFU #0 by expanding the scope of CFU stories with the second issue of The Crossing, which fills in the back story of the CFU, by introducing the Poisson brothers as they battle out of the 15th level of hell in Entropy, and by exploring the life of a young man named Justin Henderson in Redorik, a book which was recently reviewed by The Outhouse comic book blog.

“Mr. Wong decides to focus on Justin's character and painting the world around him. Even the introduction to the issue seems somewhat out of place; however, what the introduction does do is give readers of CFC's other titles clues that there is a link between them all, without confusing or overwhelming any readers who simply wish to read this title without distractions. I cannot help but think that in reading the introduction, you won't be tempted to check out the other series,” said Jeff Haas, of The Outhouse.

Crystal Fractal Comics is a Toronto-based comic book publisher founded in 2007 by publisher Derrek Lennox. Its first release was published in 2008, while two more followed in 2010. CFC aims to diversify the comic book industry with its dynamic, original content and is also a forerunner in its efforts to help preserve First Nations culture and history with its adaptations of First Nations’ legends. The Legend of the Sleeping Giant is the first book of its kind, adapting the Fort William First Nation legend of the sleeping giant from the Thunder Bay, Ontario area to comic book format.

Redorick is the latest release from upcoming Canadian publisher Crystal Fractal Comics. It tells the story of a boy named Justin Henderson, who seems perfectly normal, albeit a bullied outsider, until he starts experiencing strangely vivid nightmares. In these nightmares he hears an ominous voice chanting his name. The black letter boxes and white type instill this voice with a sense of danger, as does the slightly psychedelic quality of the artwork. Later, the strangeness becomes even more pronounced when Justin's arm enters some kind of void in school locker. This issue does not spend a lot of time explaining these bizarre occurrences; instead, Mr. Wong decides to focus on Justin's character and painting the world around him. Even the introduction to the issue seems somewhat out of place; however, what the introduction does do is give readers of CFC's other titles clues that there is a link between them all, without confusing or overwhelming any readers who simply wish to read this title without distractions. I cannot help but think that in reading the introduction, you won't be tempted to check out the other series. But back to the story itself...

The world of Justin Henderson is a rough one, easily recognizable as an urban neighborhood. There are gangs and drug pushers. In fact, the middle third of the story has Justin and his friend conned into becoming drug mules. Fans will appreciate Justin's underdog quality. Within one issue he is duped and bullied, and then there are those nightmares.

The realism of the story is reminiscent of Mr. Wong's other series from Image, After the Cape. This is clearly a story that exists within the grey areas of the world. But Justin is not the only thread in this story. There is also a priest who doubts his faith, which leads to very exciting scenes on pages 13 and 14. You'll know which ones I mean when you read them. It's both jaw-dropping and comment-worthy. After page 21, things really get moving when the psychotic character of Carnivale is introduced. This introduction is action-packed and bloody! The last page will certainly have you anticipating the next issue.

Also of note is the art, which perfectly matches the realistic quality of the comic. Mr. Maia does a wonderful job of creating each character. You can tell a lot about what is occurring in a character's mind, by the detailed expression on their face. And again there is that page fourteen. Awesome! Let's not forget the final splash page either. The grittiness of the artwork fits the final third of the comic best. The gangster looks genuine. They look mean and like people you do not wish to ever meet.

All in all great job by all, and great issue.

For Field of Nightmares, I'm bringing back some things I picked up from my time in Hong Kong into this story that takes place during the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Both the story and art style are heavily Asian influenced.

Jia Xin Lin (P046) has done a beautiful job illustrating the emotional metaphors of the story.

If there are any After the Cape fans out there, you'll be happy to know that Marco Rudy, artist of After the Cape I will be there too at P020-A. He just moved from Mozambique to Toronto a few weeks ago. This will be his first ever comic book convention, so if you want a sketch or something signed, this is a great opportunity. His work with DC is just mind blowing.

I'll also have there some new...I tell you more about that as we get closer to the show.

Grunts: War Stories in January Previews

Just wanted to let everyone know that GRUNTS: War Stories (Arcana Studio) is in January 2010 Previews Catalog PAGE 194. Please pre-order this fantastic collection of back stories written by amazing writers and a script monkey (that would be me). I wrote a story titled: Iron Snake in the Desert; yes, many have pointed out the many meanings of that title. Honestly, that never crossed my mind. Wonder if it popped into Shannon's? I'll have to ask him about that.

This was a very fun piece to write. When Shannon (Denton) asked if I would like to contribute to a back story for the his and Keith Giffen's mini series, Grunts, I didn't have to think long before saying yes. There were challenges in researching both the original material and WWII facts. As I was looking for inspiration I found a picture of a private riding on a top of train loaded with a mix bag of bombs and what have you. It was nutty. There he was there sitting on a box of them, smiling away and posing for the camera with his rifle in hand. That set my mind off (heh). The train became my backdrop for my story and...well, come back in a bit and I'll tell you more. First, tell your local shops and friends to get this puppy, er collections of stories!

First I'm way--way behind with this, but with that said I do have a new blog that I'm working on about my move to Hong Kong. Yes, that's right, I've moved to Hong Kong. So this was the last con I attended. I got to see old friends and made new ones, which is always a great thing. Some notable surprises were a fan from Germany that actually found me in the craziness that all conventions are. He was there with his lovely wife. Turns out he also owned a comic shop there. I was floored to hear that my little book made it out there. For those who were wondering who was that man that kept on hugging me throughout the convention, it was the man, Templeton. He made a promise to hug me until I left and he's a man of his word. My family came for the first time to this event and the kids had a blast. They enjoyed the cosplay and general fanfare. My oldest made me take her to the Tron lightcycle display and asked to watch the Green Lantern animated film First Flight. I've taught her well (heh). All right, on with the photo parade.

You, Me and Zombie

Children books come in all shapes and sizes. They are fairy tales, adventures tales and stories with zombies. What!? ZOMBIES?

Agnes Garbowska has written and illustrated a wonderful zombie book for kids called You, Me and Zombie. I had a sneak peek as it was coming together while I was helping with edits. "What a terrific idea," is all I had running in my head as I read the story and looked at the art. I got a copy of it with an awesome sketch of my kids as zombies (thanks Agnes!). It is now one of my kids must read books.

So I've been hinting at something that I'm excited about (but officially can't talk about just yet), which is what the following pertains to. For the keen people out there, and I know all of you are, do "read" the last photo carefully.

After Con Blahs

I know I promised to share an interesting development from the convention today, but posting photos didn't workout with my phone.

The good news is that I did take photos, which will be up by tomorrow night, if not earlier. Then you can see what I'm talking about.

So what did I do there?

I made it a point to spend more time away from the table and found the experience a lot more fulfilling; that is I wanted to get to know people I've met in the past and was happy that I did. I also got to meet new people, making new friends along the way.

I signed a contract with Jon Bryans (NGuard) to join him in a new venture called Story Factory. It's a platform for us to co-write projects with. That was part of the announcement news. Look at the photos for the other half.

I'm humbled that there are people who like what I do and took the time to let me know. If I didn't say it to you personally, let me take this time to express my deepest thank you. You may think it's insignificant to let someone know how you feel about their craft, but it surely does mean a lot, especially to me.

Thanks to everyone for making this convention a memorable one!

I am scripting the first four issue story arc of Crystal Fractal Comics' upcoming title Redorik. The series is planned for solicitation in the beginning of 2009!

Redorik focuses on Justin Henderson, a high school student who can telepathically read the thoughts and emotions of others and teleport to distant locations through a pocket universe. Unlike his peers, who fantasize about having supernatural powers, Justin must learn to come to terms with his new found abilities, in addition to dealing with the death of a friend and trying to determine which of the voices he hears are those of others, and which are his own subconscious. He is unaware of the fact that he is a descendant of Nathanael de Velasquez, a powerful mage whose alias Doctor Twilight is the central character in another eponymous Crystal Fractal title.

Crystal Fractal Comics is an up and coming comic book publisher and character licensing company seeking to diversify the industry through the dynamic story lines and characters of its titles. Where to begin? First I have to mention the guy who dressed up like Namor. He was dead on and had a bunch of us talking about him. Yeah, I'll leave that there. I was invited to a Win, Lose or Draw panel and showed why I don't draw. I think people will be having nightmares for a long, long time because of me. During the con I met With some cool new people like Greg Hyland of Lethargic Lad fame. I didn't know he drew for the Lego fan magazine, not to mention had the coolest box of Lego people references with him. Both my wife and I were planning on stealing it, but by Sunday, we were just too tired. There was also Jessie Lam and J. Korim from Neozoic from Red 5 Comics. Very cool people all around. Jessie was selling some really cool posters that were going fast. If you see her next time, do ask her about them. She might have a few left.

A very memorable moment was when a female Jedi was checking out my stuff and accidentally hit a passerby in the eye with her lightsaber. The guy was all right, but I bet he never thought he would get hit in the eye with a lightsaber.

I didn't take any photos while I was there except for one, which was encouraged by my wife.

Yup, I so have a rocking cool wife. I also have hope for a reboot of the Catwoman franchise now.

Paradise Toronto Comicon Report

So the con went by in a congested-dizzy-blur. Why you ask? Wifey, the baby and I are sick--yeah, again. I think the oldest one has developed a super immune system, since she was the only one healthy.

It was fun having the clan there. The kids had a blast, which was great considering this was their first con. The older one did have a spill. We though she might have sprained her wrist, but of course by the time we finished packing up the car she was fine. Kids

On day two, the older one decided to see what would happen if you stab a straw into a large green balloon. The pop was more like a blam. The whole con stopped for a split second. Afterwords she ran to mommy. Cameron Stewart gave a replacement balloon--(Thanks dude!). She was her smiling self again.

Unfortunately everyone was too sick to remember that we brought the camera with us, so no pics. Sorry.

Sequential Arts Symposium and Joe Shuster Awards 2008

As some of you might know, I'm a nominee for the 2008 Joe Shuster's Outstanding Canadian Comic Book Writer award, and still am. Heh. Before the awards ceremony they held their first annual Sequential Arts Symposium, where I had a great time seeing old friends and making some new ones. I was also on the Writing for Sequential Art panel , which I hope I gave some useful information throughout my bantering.

After the symposium I went for dinner with friends. Francis Manapul led us on a death march to a nice Italian restaurant. (I'm kidding, it was a nice walk) Who knew that there was a street festival that day?

Grunts 2nd Trade - Short Story Sneak Peek

As some of you might know, I was suppose to have a six page short story in the Grunts trade paperback. My story is titled Iron Snake in the Desert. It's a back story of LT. Kiko, but didn't make it.

Paradise Comics' Store Signing Went...

...well considering I was either coughing or blowing out phlegm at people. It was great to see people who read the first series jazzed about After the Cape II. I think people are going to fall in love with Sergio's art. Got some new people to pick up After the Cape: How Far to Fall trade, which I hope they enjoy. I ended up buying a few things myself (Damn you Doug! Heh.)

I can't thank everyone at Paradise Comics enough for their continued support. If you're looking for a great comic shop this is definitely one of them.

So it was supposed to be out November 7th, but it's not. We got everything to the printers way on time, but still, things happen. From what I know, something happened between the printers and Diamond. All this means is that people will have to wait a week for the book to come, and for me to be at Paradise Comics to deface as many as I can while I'm there.

Oh well, these things happen. What can you do?

How the Signing at Chapters - Markham Went

They provided me with a table at the front of the store which was terrific and much appreciated. I was please to see so much interest with my first trade paperback from non-comic book readers. I got to sign many books, which I hope people will enjoy. Both the costumers and staff were friendly and kind. If I ever get a chance to sign there again, I definitely will.

My First Bookstore Signing

It actually went pretty well.

There were many people walking by, trying not to notice the weird guy sitting at the table with his a stack of his first trade paperback. There were also people who were interested and chatted with me. Some even had me sign their copies. (Nothing like defacing books in a bookstore. Heh.)

One of the things that I need to figure out how to tell people is that After the Cape, isn't for kids (though when you do say that, people tend to think it's a dirty comic). I had some moms and dads give me that eye popping stare when I told them what it was about. I explained that there is a variety of comics for all ages, so they had to be aware of what to get their kids.

Maybe I'll print out a small blurb about the series and see if that helps.

I was there from 1 - 5 PM, so if you did show up and I was gone, you can still catch me on November 3rd at the Chapters at Woodbine and HWY 7. (There's also two signed copies in the store.)

I do want to take this time to thank everyone at Indigo for being so nice and kind to a nobody like me.
